MakeNos
MakeNos has been generated by Rod McCosker VK2DOT. MakeNos will generate an operational version of a packet program called JNOS. All the amateur radio packet operator has to perform is -
1: Start MakeNos
2: Update the JNOS Makenos Setup screen [main screen].
3: Generate JNOS by pressing alt<G>.
4: Start JNOS by pressing alt<J>.
5: Type go to start JNOS at any other time.
And bingo you are operational running a TCP/IP NOS communication amateur radio packet system which has been completely configured for you.
Version 3.02 of Makenos generates for the user the JNOS version 1.11f for DOS/Windows & LINUX.
==JNOS==
JNOS for DOS and LINUX has been configured for AX25, NETROM, Telnet, TCP/IP, SMTP, Pop3mail, TTYLink, FTP, LZW Compression, FBB Compressed Mail Forwarding, TNC or Baycom Modems and up to 4 comms ports can be use. The use of a TNC or Baycom modem per port. [same for LINUX]
==IBM DOS & WINDOWS MACHINES==
This version of MakeNos has been generated to execute on IBM type of computers, 386 or above. Versions of this software are available also to run on the XT type machine.
==LINUX MACHINES==
MakeNos will generate all files and, configure relevant files for you to become operationally running JNOS under LINUX. JNOS under Linux runs at VK2DOT and was generated by MakeNos [running under XP]. Makenos will only run under DOS/Windows, but will generate all LINUX files (ready to run). If you have a TCP/IP or SAMBA etc. link to your LINUX machine then it will be easy to port. In the interim it is advised to generate the LINUX version to a diskette & then read the diskette into the LINUX machine. On my XP machine the Linux machine is drive N:.
==TNC===
Set TNC to kiss mode to enable JNOS to work on air. See your TNC manual for this operation.
==VERSIONS==
The latest version of MakeNos is available from the VK2AFY web site. MakeNos was generated to be a companion to members of the Central Coast Amateur Radio Club's Tuesday night packet group. This group has become conversant with the JNOS type of TCP/IP communication software, which MakeNos generates. As members of the group find problems or they require an enhancement, a new revision is generated. Please read file /files/version.hlp for information on different versions.
When new MakeNos versions are released, place diskette into A: drive, execute MakeNos on hard drive & read in new version from A: drive, quit MakeNos and restart MakeNos for the new version. Or run it from the hard drive.
Complete Versions that are zipped into executable files, will have the format of MNOS***F.EXE, where *** represents the version number. See FIRST TIME USERS below.
==CENTRAL COAST AMATEUR RADIO CLUB Members==
If you are a member of the Central Coast Amateur Radio Club and you have obtained a copy of MakeNos, check the file /jnos/domain.txt for your callsign and associated IP number. If it is not there, email John Tanner VK2ZXQ [jhtanner@telstra.com]. John will allocate your IP number. Then update the file /jnos/domain.txt with your callsign and IP number in the same format as other entries in the file. Also notify Rod McCosker VK2DOT that you are intending to become a member of the group (not necessarily attending the Tuesday meetings). All members will then be notified by the group alias via the Central Coast ARC POPMail of your addition to the group. [Note. you can be a member of the Central Coast system if you can connect to the VK2AFY packet system on 439.150/434.150Mhz, or any other frequency or via the web.]
==OTHER AREAS==
Contact your TCP/IP area coordinator for a new domain.txt file and your TCP/IP number. This number will be 44.136.#.* for Australia. (where 44 represents Amateur, 136 is Australia, # is your area number and * represents your IP number.) You will have to replace your /files/domain.txt file with a local area one, or add the local area entries to the file you have. You will have to change the entries in the file /files/clients.dat. clients are members of your local group that you contact frequently. ie, if you send a group message, all members of the group will receive the message. Also the routing is setup from the a:/files/clients.dat file.

==GENERAL HELP==
All help files are unpacked into the /jnos/public directory when jnos is generated. However the following files in directory /files can be read before installing MakeNos or jnos... mnos.hlp, jnos.hlp, baycom.hlp and doc.zip. Also read the /readme.txt file.
==FIRST TIME USER==
It is advisable if you are using DOS as an operating system to run Memmaker before generating JNOS. [ie execute /DOS/MEMMAKER.EXE.] This will release additional memory for JNOS to use. One would advise new Amateur Packet Operators to dedicate an IBM PC to JNOS. There are many advantages to this. You can let the PC operate all the time but switching off the monitor when not viewing. Power drain is low and, the probability of the system catching fire is low if you heed simple precautions.
JNOS runs on XT & up PC's. It is recommended that you need a 386 or above PC, with 1Mb of memory. JNOS will run from a 720Mb floppy drive, however it is advisable to have a 10Mb minimum hard drive. With POPmail & SMTP it is recommended to run the PC 24hrs a day [with monitor switched off].
If you received MakeNos on a diskette, place the diskette in the A: drive and press M then Enter.
If you received MNos215F.exe from vk2dot or other means, move the NMOS***F.exe file to a temporary directory [eg c:\tmp] of your hard drive, then execute the file by typing "MNos227F.exe -e" (or similar file) from your hard disk. MakeNos will be installed onto the hard drive your are using; [below the directory you are in (eg c:\tmp). MakeNos will make its own directories, etc.
Start makenos by typing "m<cr>".
Press "altC".
Press "F5". [files that are marked to be updated are copies to the HD at
the directory named. (eg. c:\makenos).
Press "Esc"
Press "altX"
type "cd \makenos"
type "m<cr>" [Your new makenos should be running.]
MNos227F.exe represents the full version of MakeNos Version 2.27. [Do not use "MNos***U.EXE -e" if you are a first time user.] MakeNos uses approximately 1.3Mb of hard disk or diskette space.
When MNos***F.exe has finished, perform the following commands:-
cd \MakeNos<cr>
m<cr>
[After you have generated JNOS, you can, from the root directory, MakeNos directory or the jnos directory press :- "m<cr>" to execute MakeNos.] MNos****.exe is now generated by RAR, thus windows is not necessary to run.
==BAYCOM MODEM==
If you use a Baycom Modem, makenos will automatically set up the parameters for running from 1 to 4 Baycom Modems. Remember, if you are using more than 1 modem with JNOS, make sure that your computer is fast enough. More than 1 modem has not been tested with JNOS. Baycom has not been setup for LINUX.
==MAKENOS OPERATION==
The main screen of MakeNos will default to the parameters used by my station VK2DOT. The function key to change a parameter to your station is at the beginning of each line. [ie F1 to change callsign, alt F2 to change your gateway station, etc.] There are also sub-menus:-
alt F1 = Operating System
alt F2 = Update Files
alt F3 = JNOS options
alt F4 = LAN
^F1-^F4 = Change Port data.
^F5 = Change Gateway
^F6 = Change forwarding repeater.
alt C = Copy MakeNos from A: to C:, C: to A:, format diskette, dir, etc.
alt E = Edit all JNOS & MakeNos files.
alt G = Generate JNOS directories & files from menu information.
alt H = View the Help files.
alt J = Execute JNOS.
alt S = Save your changed information. Always use this cmd after altering
any data on main menu.
alt T = Terminal program, only operate with TNC at present.
alt U = Utilities - Format A: & Reboot system.
alt X = Quit from MakeNos.
[Note: when you enter your callsign, your IP number will automatically be displayed, if it is in file /makenos/files/domain.txt.]
The sequence of operation of MakeNos is thus:-
Install MakeNos from a floppy diskette or, move MNos***F.exe to the root directory of the hard disk & execute.
cd /makenos<cr>
m<cr>
Change JNOS Setup Menu data to your data.
Save your date - alt S key.
Generate JNOS - alt G key.
Execute JNOS - alt J key. [when MakeNos finishes - type go<cr>.]
JNOS should now be running. NOTE: Please read all information on a menu or sub-menu screen, it is all there.
==CLIENTS.DAT FILE==
This file is used by a group to allow the group to popmail & have routing setup between them. This file comprised the following records per entry:- <name> <callsign> <near station>
See the file "CLIENTS.DAT" for further explanation. The file can be edited from within makenos - [altE then altF1].
==Main Port==
Port 1 is regarded by Makenos as the main port. ie. All routing from the "clients.dat" file, defaults to port 1 paramaters for routing.
==PORT MENU Sub-Menu==
F1 = Port active or inactive.
F2 = Port Used. [COM1:-COM4:]
F3 = Port name. [eg 4700. reference 144.700Mhz]
F4 = Baycom or TNC used on the port. [default TNC]
F5 = Port Speed. [default 4800 bps]
F6 = TxDelay. [default 350 mSec]
F7 = TxTail. [default 150 mSec]
F8 = Persisance. [default ]

F10 = Frequency Infomation. [eg 144.700Mhz 1200bps for VK2RAG LAN]
AltR = Reset to standard.
altC = Port Interrupt/Addresses sub-menu.
==PORT INT/ADDR Sub-Menu==
Port 1: F1 = IRQ. ^F1 = Address.
Port 2: F2 = IRQ. ^F2 = Address.
Port 3: F3 = IRQ. ^F3 = Address.
Port 4: F4 = IRQ. ^F4 = Address.
AltR = Reset to standard.
==JNOS==
Jnos uses approximately 1.6Mb of hard disk space, with everything installed aprox 4Mb. Jnos can be run from a 730Kb diskette. The JNOS node at the Central Coast Amateur Radio Club Rooms VK2AFY was generated by MakeNos & runs on a single 730Kb diskette on a Toshiba XT PC laptop [@12V]. JNOS can be started by typing go<cr> from the root directory or the JNOS directory.
==LAN Operation==
Makenos has the ability to generate jnos that will accept ax25 bulletins from a FBB bbs. This option is switched on or off from the AltF4 option LAN. This will generate a forward.bbs file in the spool directory.
==JNOS & MEMORY==
Make sure that you have enough memory to run JNOS under dos/windows. One of the major problems with JNOS is memory. It is very hungry. Make sure that u have at least 620+Kb available. Check this out by running "mem /c |more". If it is less, [under dos - run memmaker.exe or qemm]. Under windows - make sure that u have run memmaker.exe before you install windows.
Linux systems have no problems. CCARC members have run makenos & jnos under dos/ win 3.0 up/ win95/ win98/ win ME & LINUX without any problems. The first thing which reflects memory problems - is that you cannot log into your system under JNOS [eg Home key, ^PageUp key, ^PageDown key to log in.]
==BULLETINS==
Central Coast Amateur Radio Club members have a bulleting list to select from. Aproximately every three months members select what area they want forwarded to them. Check out the /JNOS/SPOOL/AREA file for area's used on the central coast.
==FEEDBACK==
Makenos has been generated with the help of CCARC members help. They are the ones that find the faults. If you find a fault, please let me know so it can be fixed. If you think an area needs enhanching - please let me know.
